Cats 'n Kittens.... Wild 'n Domestic.... I Love All The Feline Varieties!

This site is dedicated to cat lovers all over - Enjoy
===================================================
updated: Dec 19, 2008

My bio says it all.. I'm definitely crazy about cats.. any cats... all cats and especially kittens of course..
I have two indoor guys right now and I love 'em to tears. I've had pet cats throughout my life while growing up. I was always chasing after the strays trying to pick them up (have the scars to prove it), bringing home strays etc.
I have quite a bit of experience with them but my current buddies (Zeus and Aries) are my first indoor only cats..
I've come across a few new situations that I've had to research and wished that I had a place to go where I knew I could find all the info I needed in one place.
Don't laugh but I think of myself as a "cat whisperer".. I'm very in tune with their behaviour and can almost hear what they're thinking or feeling whether it be happy, frustrated, not feeling well etc... I know what you're thinking right now... (yup she's crazy all right)

I'm excited that I've found a way to share with people just like me who are crazy about their own cats or looking for tips, advice, fun stuff..

Hopefully when I get the hang of creating this page, it will be worthy of repeat visitors who share my enthusiam about these fascinating creatures and find my site useful!

P.S. Don't forget to leave some comments at the end and let me know what you were looking for or what you thought. I'm under construction and keep making changes so keep coming back.. If you need some advice, ask me and I'll try to help out based on my experience by adding a section on the topic.
Hope you enjoy!

Yuck! I just took a bath!

My Long Lost Pal - Toby's Story

Toby's Story - Part 1 - How Toby and I Met

For one of my teen b-day's, my friend decided to give me a kitten knowing how much I loved cats... It was a bit irresponsible since my parents were not asked if it was okay but luckily we had many cats before and my Mom liked cats too.. It had just been a while and being the clean fanatic she was, she was enjoying not having to clean up after one (you know fur and litter)
Anyhow, it wasn't too hard to sell the idea and we brought him in an kept him isolated to our finished basement while we got to know each other... Well much to our dismay, this cat was like no other we had... He was still a kitten at the time and he was scared so he would find a place to hide while we were around.. The minute we left... he would start to howl loudly.. We were beside ourselves as to what to do... Well we hung in there hoping he would be more at ease over time and our patience paid off.. I guess loneliness got the best of him and he started to come out of hiding when we gave him his food. After that everything changed... We became best friends... He always wanted to be my side.. I wasn't even the one feeding him.. My father would feed him and my mother cleaned the litter. None of this mattered, I was his favorite. (To be cont'd).

Oh No! What would you do if it happened to you??

My Long Lost Pal - Toby's Story cont'd

Toby's Story - Part 2 - What Came Next...

Well it's taken me over a month to get to writing part 2 of the story... It's mostly because it brings back deep feelings of sadness and loss...
You see, Toby and I were greatest of friends for the next few years. The picture you see here is a really close likeness of Toby. We were inseparable. He would wait on the porch almost every day until he saw my car turn the corner and then run to meet at the door. We watched TV together, sunbathed together, and even slept by side when he wasn't outside for the evening...
Well one summer my parents decided we would take a trip to Europe.. I was in my early twenties and they figured this would probably be the last chance they would get to travel with me willingly by their side... I wasn't enthused about it but agreed to go..
Not knowing any better, I let my mom make arrangements with my neighbor to feed and give water to Toby inside our garage door. This would allow him to come and go as he pleased. Seemed like a good plan. Well that was mistake one.
My brother and his wife dropped by my parents place to check up on things and noticed Toby was roughed up a bit too much for their liking, I guess from being outside too much and getting into trouble with the other neighborhood cats. With all good intentions, they picked him up and took him to the vet. Being the good cat he was, they didn't think to put him in carrier or a box, this was way back in 1985-86, and they weren't experienced pet owners. That was mistake number 2.
Once they got out of the car and headed towards the vets office, Toby got startled by all the traffic noise and bolted. My sister-in-law, who was holding him at the time, couldn't hold onto him and he was out of site in seconds... Shocked and frantic, they spent hours and then days going back to the area and knocking on doors and looking for him with no success...
The dreaded day of our return home came.
I was soooo excited to see my pal, I couldn't wait.
The first thing I asked my brother when they picked us up from the airport was "How's Toby?"..
My brother and his wife glanced at each other in dismay and sadly broke the news to me..
I was in one understated word, devastated. The wind was knocked right out of my lungs and I thought I was going to suffocate.....
My jaw dropped. I was in deep shock and despair.
They may as well have driven a stake through my heart as it would have been less painful to endure than the news they just gave me. The memory of the pain I felt at that moment, is as pristine and clear in my mind 20+ years later, as it was that on that day.
It was late that night so immediately the next day, I searched high and low for Toby. I called his name over and over for hours hoping that surely he would hear me and come running to me. Nothing. No sign of him. Eventually after a couple days, I gave up and could only hope he was adopted by someone loving. I had visions of him roaming aimlessly for miles looking for home.
My best friend was gone.
Lost, alone, scared and probably feeling abandoned by his best friend, me. Where was I??
I was never the same again. The worst part was never ever finding out what happened to him or knowing if he was safe.
I didn't and could't think about adopting another cat and grieved for 15+ yrs. Every so often having dreams of finding him or him returning home still to this day.
The lesson here is don't ever underestimate the love you can have for your pet. Take care of them and don't take them for granted.
Keep your pet safe indoors. Don't let them roam outdoors where they can get hit by a car, or hurt by cruel people, poisoned by accident or entangled with another animal. Please do what's right by your furry friend.

Cat Behavior 101 for Beginners

These are some basics to get you started

Back off! I'm not in the mood!

Keep in mind you have to consider your cat's personality and the situation the behavior is being displayed.. These are guidelines. The better you know your cat, the clearer you will be.

Cat Training Secrets Experts Don't Want you to Know

Very Basic Behaviors Not Including Problematic Behavior

Purring: (Everyone knows this one!)
I'm happy or in a good mood.
This is also thought be used during periods of pain although I have never found that in my experience.

Tale wagging or stomping:
I'm agitated, frustrated.. e.g. watching a bird through the window.
The more agitated, the more movement.
This is also observed when holding a cat while purring and stroking him.. could mean that while I'm happy to be here, you're starting to annoy me.

Ears flat back:
I'm feeling threatened.
This is defensive mode. The cat feels threatened by someone or another animal.

Hissing:
I'm warning you, don't come any closer!
This usually accompanies the ears flat back along with some growling.

Growling:
Usually accompanies the hissing and ears back.
A cat will usually start growling at unknown cats that are entering their territory even if he's inside and the other cat is outside.
If they're both outside, this is a fight waiting to happen unless one backs down.

Rubbing face on objects:
I'm trying to leave my scent behind and mark territory. Usually accompanies a good mood.

Rubbing face on legs:
I'm trying to leave my scent behind but I'm also happyish...I'm probably trying to get your attention to feed me, open the door or something else I like.

Walking or running with tail up in the air:
I'm in good mood and not feeling threatened

Crouched down, tail close and wagging:
I'm not in the mood to be bothered, just leave me alone.. could also mean I'm focused on something.

Large pupils:
I'm focused and ready to pounce.
Could mean I'm nervous, scared or agitated.

Howling:
Cats will howl outside during mating season.
Indoors, sometimes a cat gives a howling sound if he's frustrated..

Combination of purring, pacing and rubbing against you at the same time:
If your cat comes to you and starts doing this, he's saying, I'm HUNGRY FEED ME!!

Health and Care

Poinsettia Toxicity Myth
I thought this one is appropriate to mention at this time of year.
After bringing home the popular plant a few days ago, I was concerned after hearing it was toxic to cats. So way up high on the shelves they went.
I did some research and found nothing to support this so enjoy your plant!
In fact I found lots of information supporting that this was a myth like the following:

The poinsettia is the most widely tested consumer plant on the market today, proving the myth about the popular holiday plant to be false:
Scientific research from The Ohio State University has proved the poinsettia to be non-toxic to both humans and pets. All parts of the plant were tested, including the leaves and sap.

Fresh Water
So important to your cat.
Bowls should be emptied, cleaned and replaced with fresh water as many times a day as possible.
I know my cats do not like drinking water that has been standing for too long. They are aware of the difference between fresh and stale water and instinctively know that running water is fresher than standing water. This is why some cats gravitate towards running water from taps or toilets.
My cats will go as far as to sit in front of the bowl as a signal they are ready and waiting for me to replace the water.(Pay attention to your cats, they are often trying to tell you something)
I usually change the water before going to work, when I get home from work and most days before I go to bed.
Water is important to keep your cat's urinary tract healthy. If they do not drink enough water, painful crystals can form. The crystals can create a blockage preventing your cat from being able to urinate. If this happens, your cat must see a veterinarian immediately. Your cat can die from this blockage.

If you notice your cat is drinking an unusually large volume of water or drinking very frequently then you should also take your cat to the vet to rule out any concerns with the kidneys.
