Going Green For The Holidays

Lately, all anyone's been talking about is 'Going Green'. Well what does this mean exactly? It means taking steps in your day to day life to help the earth become a better, greener earth. With the holidays fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to share some tips about 'Going Green' for the holidays.

Day to Day Steps

There are a few steps that you can take everyday, not just for the holidays, that can help you 'Go Green'

  • Shut off the light when you leave. If your forgetfull you might consider putting timers on your lights.

  • Spare the central air/heat. By changing the temperature of your air-conditioning and heater you not only help the earth, you help your bills!

  • Save water. Turn it off while your brushing your teeth, take short showers, and try to flush less often!

  • Recycle

Go Green While Cooking Those Feasts

While cooking that wonderfull Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas Ham, think of these tips for cooking green

  • Buy organic, locally grown food

  • Use cast-iron skillets in place of non-stick when you can.

  • Plan accordingly, don't cook too much. Many people think of these times as great feasts and feasts means lots of food. But just because it's a holiday or the food is especially yummy doesn't mean you're going to eat more than usual. Make just enough for everyone with no extras to avoid wasting food.

  • If you make too much food have leftovers or create a compost pile.

  • If you like to deep fry your turkey, don't forget to despose of the used oil properly, not down the drain or in the wilderness.

Shopping Green

  • Buy and use reusable cloth bags instead of paper or plastic ones from the stores.

  • Get your loved one a 'Green Gift'

  • Buy reusable and long lasting items

  • Try to avoid things that have excess packaging material

  • Buy gifts in recyclable packaging

Green Decorating

I know those little paper napkins with turkeys and wreaths on them look adorable but resist the urge!

  • Avoid paper products such as napkins, tablecloths, cups, plates, and more.

  • Use live greenery, live meaning cut fresh from the wild! Stuff that is sold as 'live'
by vendors and stores is not really live and often bone dry, which can lead to fires. Some small, live trees may be able to be replanted after your done.

  • If you've got the space, consider growing your own greenery.

  • Avoid fake fragences like candles and potpourri. Use natural oils and herbs.

  • Re-use last years old wrapping paper, cards, and bows.

Green Lighting

Christmas time means Christmas lights, and that means higher electric bills! The best way to light up your home for Christmas while being enviromentally friendly AND saving money id by using LED lighting.

Did you know ....

  • LED's use 10% less electricity than regular lights

  • They don't get hot

  • They last forever - 100,000 hours

  • When one burns out it doesn't take out the whole string of lights - No more searching the entire string of lights to find the burnout (or just giving up and buying new ones!)

  • They have less nasty chemicals than regular lights

I love all the reusable bags! I've never been a fan of gift bags but these would then be a second gift and free up landfill space.
