Shrek the Third Review

By Brian Tallerico

"If you head to Shrek the Third expecting some sort of reimagining of the characters or even just a significant expansion of the big green guy's world, you're going to be disappointed."

Mike Myers' Scottish accent returns to movie theatres this summer with...no, not Austin Powers 4 and, no, not So I Married An Axe Murderer 2. I'm talking about Shrek the Third, one of 2007's tentpole family movies. Once you get past all the hype and collect all four Shrek commemorative McDonald's glasses, your enjoyment of Shrek the Third is going to largely depend on two main things - how much you liked the first two films and what exactly you're expecting from a Shrek sequel. If you head to Shrek the Third expecting some sort of reimagining of the characters or even just a significant expansion of the big green guy's world, you're going to be disappointed. It's the rare sequel - Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins - that finds a way to take something familiar and make it seem shiny and new again. As a sequel, Shrek the Third isn't aiming nearly that high. Essentially, DreamWorks Animation just wants to cement the foundation of their never-ending Shrek franchise, delivering a safe and inoffensive family comedy. Everything about Shrek the Third is familiar - from the characters to the jokes to the story - but if you enjoyed the first two Shreks and don't mind paying again for something you've kind of seen before, you won't be disappointed.

Shrek the Third opens with everyone's favorite ogre (Mike Myers) visiting his in-laws again and discovering that he may be the unwitting heir to the throne of Far, Far Away. With his typical low self-esteem in full effect, Shrek's not too excited at the prospect of leadership, either as the ruler of Far, Far Away or as a father after Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) announces she's going to have a gaggle of "cute in an ugly way" babies. With this looming storm of responsibility on the horizon, Shrek, Donkey (Eddie Murphy), and Puss (Antonio Banderas) go on a quest to find another possible heir, Fiona's cousin Arthur (Justin Timberlake), hopefully solving one crisis before they're forced to deal with Shrek's impending paternity. The writers loosely reimagine the King Arthur legend with Artie as an unpopular high school kid, Lancelot as the school heartthrob (he makes Guinevere go all "ooeth"), and Mr. Merlin (Eric Idle) as Artie's magic teacher who's obsessed with self-discovery.

While Shrek is away, trying to drag Artie back to take his place on the throne, the nefarious Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) returns to Far, Far Away, leading a gang of all the screwed-over villains he can find - Captain Hook, The Wicked Witch, etc. With Shrek out of town, the Prince wants to take the throne by force, and it's up to Fiona and her crack squad of fairy-tale princess pals to defend the kingdom. As the story builds to a head, the question looms, "Who will be the new King? Shrek, Arthur, or Charming?" And how many pop culture references can the writers shove in along the way?

Shrek the Third continues the same clever juggling of modern jokes mixed with well-known fairy tale icons that made the first two Shrek so popular, but the balance is sometimes a little bit off. There are moments that are incredibly clever - all of the high school scenes with Arthur are great (a "Just Say Nay" rally and mascot contest are particularly hilarious) and the moment when the Gingerbread Man watches his life flash before his eyes is one of the funniest scenes of the whole series - but there are also far more dead spots, completely devoid of laughs, than in either of the first two films. But, in the end, every low point - whomever thought asking Fergie to sing "Barracuda" was a good idea should not be brought back for any future Shrek installments - is balanced by an equally high one - such as the discovery that Pinocchio has finally learned how to double-talk his way around lying. As Prince Charming says, there are two sides to every story, and the good and bad in Shrek the Third do a pretty decent job of balancing each other out.

The good versus evil battle of Shrek the Third continues in the realm of its voice acting as well. Mike Myers is still having fun as the jolly green giant, but Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy sound like they're literally phoning their work in at some points (and with today's technology, they might be). But every time that Diaz threatens to bore the audience, Rupert Everett, Antonio Banderas, or Amy Poehler show up and steal a scene, winning back the love of Shrek fans everywhere. All in all, Shrek the Third is a balancing game - lame joke followed by clever one, boring line read followed by a brilliant one, and so on - and, for most people, the balance will never tip far enough into the negative. Shrek the Third won't set the world on fire or even be anyone's favorite movie in the series, but it also doesn't damage the legacy of, let's admit, possibly the most influential animated creation of the new millennium. Shrek may not believe it himself, but he can still hold his head up pretty high. At least until the fourth film, that is.

The Hollywood Reporter Review

Bottom Line: The third time is not the charm

By Kirk Honeycutt

May 10, 2007

Much of the bite and a good deal of the wit of the first two films are missing.

You can't help but miss Shrek. You know, that ornery, mammoth, flatulent, trumpet-eared, icky-green-colored ogre. Oh, he's still large and green (and brilliantly voiced by Mike Myers) in his third movie outing, "Shrek the Third." But his manners and disposition have improved to the point he is threatened by middle-class respectability. Nor is he the only character to have changed for the worse. Donkey (Eddie Murphy) is less the hilariously annoying motormouth companion to Shrek and more a helpful, even empathetic pal. That's bad enough, but he is no longer very funny either.

Much of the bite and a good deal of the wit of the first two films are missing here. The rude send-up of beloved fairy tale conventions remains -- somewhat -- but these playful jabs no longer come as pleasing surprises. You expect them. And you expect better.

DreamWorks Animation has clearly gone to the well one time too many in "Shrek the Third." Not that you can blame the company. That well has produced buckets of lucre. The first two films yielded $1.4 billion in boxoffice receipts and sold more than 130 million DVDs -- a green monster indeed. So no one should expect a serious drop in the eagerness of families around the world to embrace a new Shrek movie.

What "Shrek the Third" has evolved into is less a story film than a vaudeville show. Fittingly, it begins with a medieval version of dinner theater. It continues with pure slapstick between Shrek and bride Fiona (again Cameron Diaz) as they riotously disrupt a court ceremony while handicapped by stiff royal clothes. The film then proceeds with a jousting duel, a magic act, dancing, singing (deliberately bad), a drag queen, personal appearances by a host of fairy tale princesses -- Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rapunzel -- and a bra burning before returning to another theatrical extravaganza.
The glue struggling to hold all this together is a quest by Shrek to find a new king of rule Far Far Away upon the death of his bride's dad (John Cleese but only briefly). Shrek is next in line to the throne -- guess Far Far Away doesn't believe in a matriarchy -- but he abhors the idea. He just wants to return to his hovel in the swamp.

So Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Books (Antonio Banderas) set sail in search of Fiona's long-lost cousin Artie (newcomer Justin Timberlake). Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), jilted b
