There's already many lenses about cities, towns and villages from all over the world. A city lens can be about nearly anything - where you were born, where you grew up, where you went to school, where you vacationed, or even one you've read a lot about and want to share that knowledge. Tips From Your Admin --
...or, how to build a really good City Guide lens.
- The lens MUST be on just one city. (Actually, anything that isn't won't make it into the Squidoo City Guide.) This can be tougher with areas that lend themselves to blurring of borders, but it is an important feature of the Guide. If you've got great info on, say, Long Island - consider doing two (or more ) lenses and talking about the specific city on Long Island that has something cool to offer and maybe a bit of history on that specific town.
- Add opinions. Yes, good factual information is important, but so is your personal opinion on that town. And your recommendations for things to see or to do, or to avoid.
- Don't be afraid to focus. Yes, the lens needs to be on one town, but can it be about a part of the town? Sure. How about restaurants (keep them within city limits please), museums, or parks? All of these can work, especially for bigger towns.
- University's or colleges don't count as cities. But, you can still make this work for you - give us some info on the town and what else is there, then tell us all about the school you are passionate about - the two sets of information will complement each other.
- Support your fellow City Guide Members. No, I am not telling you to randomly hand out five stars to every other lens in the Guide, that's silly and doesn't help the good lenses at all. But, when you have the time, please visit the other lenses in the guide, give them a read and leave a comment. And, if you feel it's appropriate give them the stars you think they deserve.
- Something else to consider is to check out our lensmasters' other lenses. Most of the folks here have some amazing other lenses and you are sure to find something you like there also. Leave notes in those as well, and if you are so moved, mention the City Guide, or that you are fellow members.
