Mary Mallon has on occasion been called the most dangerous woman in the world! Why? Because she was an asymptomatic carrier of Salmonella typhi. The organisms colonized in her body, without causing sickness in her- but making her constantly "contagious". Mary was employed as a cook, and through the food that she cooked and served, she infected a large number of people, many of whom died. Her biggest problem was that she refused to believe that she could make people sick, when she was not sick herself. After being told by the authorities that she couldn't work as a cook, she did go for a while trying to survive doing jobs other than cooking. Eventually, though, she got another job as a cook using a fake name, and caused yet another outbreak!

Mary Mallon (September 23, 1869 - November 11, 1938), also known as Typhoid Mary, was the first person in the United States to be identified as a healthy carrier of typhoid fever. Over the course of her career as a cook, she infected 47 people, three of whom died from the disease. Her fame is in part due to her vehement denial of her own role in spreading the disease, together with her refusal to cease working as a cook.
